Halcyon Hanalei, Kauai
The commission
A private guest residence and pool house within a Hanalei compound, set among the sauna and cold plunge as part of a constellation of structures arranged around the water. The interior is finished in wax-sealed birch with cherry accents, a soft and tactile foundation built to breathe in the humidity of the islands. Composite teak-and-holly decking grounds the floor, and deep emerald mosaic tile, hand-cleaved, lines the bath.
Solid brass fixtures from Ralph Lauren carry through the rooms, chosen to weather and deepen in the salt air, while Pendleton woolens layer in warmth and pattern. Every material was selected to hold up in plain view of the ocean and to age with grace rather than resist it. Halcyon takes its name from a season of calm — a place built for stillness, ritual, and the long afternoon.
