Solace Highlands, North Carolina

The commission

Private guest quarters for a mountain estate above Highlands, conceived for clients who measure a space by the quality of its making. The interior is built around black walnut millwork, shaped and finished to give the rooms a warm, architectural foundation. Black stone anchors the kitchen and bath, and matte-black fixtures carry the discipline through every point of contact. Against that dark, deliberate palette, goldenrod crushed velvet upholstery lands as a single deliberate warmth.

A run of slim olive tile threads through the build, and the whole composition holds a quiet theatricality — rooms arranged with the precision of a well-set scene, ordered without ever showing the effort. Nothing is incidental, and nothing is hurried. Solace takes its name from the comfort it was built to give: a place to arrive, settle, and be wholly taken care of.
